If you thought that this summer was hot, then you obviously haven’t been watching the scorching jewelry trend of the season – drop stone earrings.
Earrings come in an almost infinite array of designs, however they generally fall under three broad categories:
- Stud earrings: These earrings are usually small and sit flush against the ear.
- Drop earrings: These earrings hang from the ear and below their setting.
- Hoop earrings: These earrings are round or a permutation of a circular shape.
And it is drop earrings that are currently providing all the sizzle as the “must-have” summer accessory. However, not just any drop earring, drop earrings with a stone – preferably a precious one.
Just Dropping In
As a rule of thumb, drop earrings are not as anonymous as stud earrings and perceived as being a bit more classical and classy than hoop earrings. They feel just as comfortable with your favorite pair of worn jeans and a T-shirt or with a couture gown. Of course, as always, it all has to do with the earrings and the context – a large, bright pair of chandelier drop earrings would look a little out of place with your weekend tracksuit but a smaller pair of drop earrings with a more conservative colored stone may not.
The recently held 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in LA for all intents and purposes could have been called the “Screen Actors Drop Earrings Awards,” as they framed the faces of the acting elite traipsing down the red carpet.
Perennial red carpet fixture, Cate Blanchett, wore a pair of Chopard brown diamond briolette drop earrings. Best Actress nominee, Amy Adams, wore a pair of vintage sapphire, diamond, and emerald earrings from Cartier and another Best Actress nominee, Anna Gunn, from ‘Breaking Bad’ accessorized with large Irene Neuwirth white gold teardrop earrings with black onyx, lapis, diamond pave, and rose cut diamonds. Perhaps the award presented should’ve been for Best Drop Earrings and not Best Actress – how about Best Actress in Drop Earrings?
Jennifer Lawrence wore Jennifer Meyer 18 karat yellow gold Japanese amethyst, blue sapphire and diamond earrings. Sofia Vergara looked stunning in Amrapali diamond teardrop earrings and Best Supporting Actress winner, Lupita Nyong’o, was resplendent in Gucci paired woth Fred Leighton jewelry, including a pair of gold and citrine drop earrings.
Even award presenter, Jennifer Garner, opted for drop earrings – in her case amethyst, onyx and diamond David Webb drops.
You need not be a celeb or walk the red carpet to look like a star. A pair of drop earrings with a diamond, pearl, ruby, emerald, or sapphire is all it takes to join the A-list and never drop off the radar.
