We evaluated stylist Micaela Erlanger’s recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar and weighed in on what tips rocked and what tips left us questioning her fashion prowess.

Micaela Erlanger is at the top of her game. From dressing Hollywood sweethearts Lupita Nyong’o and Michelle Dockery, to being voted number three on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Power Stylists of 2014,” Erlanger has stepped into her own limelight as a formidable force behind red carpet fashion.
Micaela recently sat down with Harper’s Bazaar to dish fashion tips and how to rock a red carpet look. While most of her insights were on point, some of her style guidelines left us wanting.
Starting with what was on point
When asked who her fashion icon was, Micaela answered “Elizabeth Taylor meets Bianca Jagger meets Grace Jones meets Brigitte Bardot,”and that’s inspiration we admire.
Yes to Side Boob. Classic cleavage is taking a backseat to the subtle side boob. Just a glimpse in an unexpected place is more sophisticated, less audacious, and definitely on fashion’s radar for the last several seasons.
Don’t Force Trends. While this should be a no-brainer, oftentimes we forget about this basic rule when spotting the younger set going full force with new trends. What’s important to remember is that trends can be accommodating. Obsessed with rompers and jumpsuits, but don’t have a supermodel physique? Matching separates may fit you better and avoid the unflattering fabric pull onesies can create.
Strapless Mermaid Gowns Are Nauseating. Cheers to a stylist that has finally ruled this look out. Prominent in the early 00’s, some stylists are still dragging this look into the next decade. It’s over, it’s played, and it’s officially boring. With so many gorgeous gowns and silhouettes to choose from, Hollywood stylists need to put this one away for some time before it will feel fresh again.
Year of the Mule. With fall right around the corner, this look can be tricky, but if played well, could produce the kind of envy all fashionistas dream of. The key is to tune into new styles and silhouettes that make this classic pump fresh again. Go for wide coverage, geometric heals, or a deep u-shape that will elongate and slenderize the foot.
Where Micaela went wrong
Matching the Entire Outfit. No. Just no. Too matchy-matchy is just that – matchy-matchy. Even if it’s on someone as flawless as Lupita Nyong’o – a repeat offender of matching her makeup, jewelry, and dress – the look becomes uniform and one-dimensional. It’s by mixing texture, color, and shape that a look pops to become unforgettable. It’s also a true testament to a stylist’s skill if they can bring together seemingly different pieces into a coherent vision.
Spanx Are Necessary. Micaela revealed that “I don’t know an actress who walks the red carpet without Spanx.“ So, yes, Spanx are the unseen fashion savior of the 21st century; however, as wonderfully shape-shifting they may be, they have their limits, and aren’t necessary on most women in Hollywood that spend an average of 20 hours/week in the gym.
Current Obsession: School Girl. This is another tricky trend. To play it well it’s crucial to not go overboard. A jacket here, a bow there, maybe some oxford; this is as far as anyone should take this look. Any more and you’ll wind up a fashion faux pas.
